Attending In-Person Workshops/Orientations

Canadian JET here! Just wondering about the June/July 2022 in-person events coming up for new JETs and whether or not it’s socially acceptable to opt out of all them. I am from NB, and these events are taking place in Montreal so it’s an expensive trip to make (flights, food, hotel, etc.). I would sign up for a fair amount of online events, of course!

  1. Im a halifax short listed JET (pei to be specific)! I sent an email to JETAA to ask if I could talk to an alumni who was from Atlantic area at the time and what their experience was like (if they went, was it worth it, if they didnt did they feel like they missed out). Not sure if they’ll be able to help before the deadline but figure its worth a shot.

Cost of flights arent great, and swoop and flair are no help. Plus with all the back and fourth thats more risk of getting covid before departure soo idk about that, I might pass. To be determined once I hear back from JETAA

  2. If the event is not required, it should be fine. Not everyone can make the commute or wants to run the risk of catching covid close to departure.

However, If the event is required (pre-orientation for ex), then you may need to make it unless otherwise instructed. But I doubt JET will retract their offer because you couldn’t attend non-mandatory events that ultimately would inconvenience you.
