I’m being forced to move out of the apartment room I currently live in due to future construction of pavement from a new road. I need advice.

Around 2021\~2022, I can’t remember clearly anymore when it was, but I was given a notice by the government that a pavement is to be built nearby but the building I currently live in stands in the way and thus I would need to move out. I would be compensated but more details will come. However, after that initial contact, apparently one tenant refused to reply and almost a year has passed, I mistakenly thought it might not go through.

And then suddenly this month, I got a notice that the government finally got a reply from everyone to go ahead. A new schedule is made where I am to move out this year from May to August and the contract is finally sent to me. The amount I would get is Y814,644. Only 80% would be given at first and after successfully moving to a new place, I’m supposed to get the remaining 20%. My room is kind of small just around 15m2 around Nerima-ku’s suburbs.

The latest letter says they’re going to contact me by tomorrow or Friday to ask for the application of the contract. Is the compensation amount pretty normal? I’m kind of stressed as I have so many things in the room.

  1. I would have no clue if it is normal, but to me it seems like a good large amount. ¥814,644. The net says right now that’s more than 6,000 USD. You’ve still got months, you had over a year before this, if I understand correctly, I say congratulations!

  2. I would move out for that amount. Especially outside of Tokyo. That’s easily a year of rent for a 1DK

  3. Seems like a good deal I only got 650,000 (lawyer negotiated) when my 1dk was demolished. Depends on your rent but being the government seems you don’t have much leeway.

  4. Yes. Atleast you are getting paid without any hasslement or court work.
My only advise is to do not sign any documents until and unless you know what you are signing.

  5. Thats more than enough to move all your things and get yourself a nice apartment. Many would be happy with this

  6. IIRC normal for this sort of thing is about 6 months rent + moving expenses. I assume since this is government pushed that it’s about that? Like 80% is = 6 months of your rent + 20% for moving expenses after you’ve moved?

  7. That looks reasonable.

It’s not as if you have a choice.

If you get all Narita Airport up in their shit, then The Man will simply demolish your squat regardless 🙁

Probably best to arrange a new Shaque d’Amor asap.
