WEB opening ceremony

Hi all, I don’t really understand what is a WEB opening ceremony for newly released products in Japan, can someone kindly help explain it to me? I tried to google translate but still don’t quite understand. Is it an online or in person event? Why does it allow you the check the contents of the blind box, do you have to purchase it in the end if you don’t like the product? Why Web unboxing products cannot be purchased at the same time as regular products?

Below is the japanese for it – ブラインド商品(Web開封式)

Many thanks!

  1. I think a lot of this will depending on the store but if it’s like this one:

It looks like it’s a sort of gacha type mechanism where you place the order, and then they tell you which one of the patterns you will recieve, but they then won’t allow you to cancel once you know what you’re getting. So it’s a “web unboxing” as in, you get to know what you’re going to recieve electronically instead of having to wait for the box (presumably to encourage you to buy multiples right away).

Why they can’t send both these and other products in one order – no idea, probably some pecularity of their system.

式 is not always “ceremony”, as a suffix it often just means “system” or “type” or “way”. For example romaji has ヘボン式 and 訓令式 which are two different systems/ways of writing Japanese in romaji. 日本式 might be translated as “Japanese style” if constrated with e.g. アメリカ式.
