Deciding between Tokyo and Osaka!

How different are these two cities? In terms of work opportunities, making friends, dating, cost of living etc?

If you were a somewhat young (30s), single Westerner with decent Japanese ability and wanting to move to either for work, which would you choose?

My thinking is that Tokyo is huge and has everything I could want. However cost of living is higher than in other parts of Japan, and people might either be colder or more stressed out comparatively.

Osaka sounds like a cheaper, smaller version of Tokyo with friendlier people. But I could be completely off base and limiting my opportunities.

I have been to both cities by the way and have a couple of friends in both (which makes this decision a bit harder).

Hope to hear some insights from people living in (or have lived in) either city!

  1. Much more work in Tokyo. (What industry are you in, though? What kind of work are you looking for? For how long?) Would recommend Tokyo for that reason; your income will determine what you can do in whatever location anyway.
