Is Koenji a Good Choice for Living Near Shin Okubo?

I’m moving to Tokyo in a few months and I’m trying to get an idea for places I’d like to get a 1k in somewhere. My destination is Shin Okubo where I’ll have to commute to 5 days a week, so I want it nearby. I’m single so having a nice nightlife/bar scene is ideal for me.

From what I’ve been searching all signs seem to point to Koenji. It’s right next door on the Chuo East line and it seems to be a lively place without being in the heart of Shinjuku’s chaos and being cheaper than anywhere on the Yamanote.

Are there any other places that I haven’t found yet that you might know of? Would you say Koenji is a good choice?

  1. koenji/nakano is a really cool area. if you take the sobu local, it stops at okubo which is a 5min ish? walk from shin okubo

  2. It’s three stops on the local train. I’ve even walked home from Kabukicho to Koenji many, many times.

Why not just live in Okubo? Plenty of affordable places bc the area is not incredibly sought after. Once you get north of Kabukicho into okubo it’s actually quite quiet. Waseda is cool, too, and it’s an easy walk.
