  1. This is the best tl;dr I could make, [original](https://english.kyodonews.net/news/2023/01/c3ef22513bfe-japan-us-to-cooperate-over-next-generation-nuclear-reactors.html) reduced by 76%. (I’m a bot)

    > Japan and the United States agreed Monday to strengthen bilateral cooperation on developing next-generation nuclear reactors during ministerial talks on energy.

    > According to a joint statement, Japan and the United States will step up cooperation in developing and constructing next-generation advanced reactors, including small modular reactors, "Within each country and third countries.”

    > The Japanese government said last month in a change from its post-Fukushima crisis nuclear energy policy that it may renew old nuclear reactors if necessary.

  2. It’s about fucking time. I’ve been waiting years for Japan to get in on this safer nuclear technology.

And the article also says that Japan in the United States will work towards securing LNG. That’s great news in an era of skyrocketing energy prices and Russia sanctions. A lot of countries could suffer in the next decade, but Japan seems to be in a relatively good position despite its lack of natural resources, thanks to its security/economic alliance with the United States.
