Permission to engage in other activies, freelancing, kojin jigyo?

Hello! I’ve been thinking about doing something as a side business in my spare time.

Maybe a hobby business, e-commerce, etc.

I’m currently working full time on a specialist in humanities visa. My company has given me the okay to pursue something on the side. I understand that I will have to request permission to engage in other activities if my side job falls out of the specialist humanities scope.

HR told me that they weren’t sure what selling items online would count as (shopify, etc.) but it’s better to receive permission just incase something goes wrong. Looking at the form, I’m not sure what to fill out for “terms of employment”, etc. as I have no contract/company to request documents from.

It’s a bit confusing:
Specialist in Humanities Visa -> Wants to open a side business selling things online (would spend maximum 10ish hours on this a week).

Do I go towards freelance and apply for a kojin jigyo?

Or would freelance just be enough? As for taxes, I have an accountant to help me!

Thank you!

  1. You don’t have to “apply for” a kojin jigyo, it’s what what you’re doing is called. (Though registering for business income gets you better tax treatment).

  2. you won’t get the permission to engage in other activities for selling stuff, it apparently has to be a skilled job that would fall under another working visa category. Took me several failed attempts for them to actually tell me this.
