Listening Material for Genki 2 chapter 16

Hi,

I am currently on Genki 2, chapter 16 & doing 3 days a week (1h lessons) on Italki. Also, watching anime with english subs quite often but only understand random word or expressions XD.

What sort of material do you recommend to practice my listening every day? Any recommendations? I am trying to look for something very beginner friendly like (free or paid, dont care).

Currently I struggle a bit with the Genki Workbook listenings and that is why I want to improve it.

Thanks!

  1. The problem with anime at this point is that you have maybe 20-30% recognition on words and you will only catch those you are familiar with at first. Isolated words, set phrases, the sort of thing which does not have a lot of ‘noise’ (other sounds/words) around it is what you will pick up first. Repeating an episode once or twice will definitely help.

Realistically, understanding everything in the show is not possible until you are at a high level. Picking out chunks is about as good as you can do in those situations. Anki with set constructions are easier to learn and train on first. You will know ones with all the words and still fail to understand without reading, this is normal until you can process the words at near native speed.

For anime and the like: Slowing down the speech helps a lot. .75x speed is great, but half speed is too slow.

  2. Yan San and the Japanese people (YouTube), or Erin’s Challenge. You can also be sure to listen to all the audio provided by Genki.

  3. A good beginner podcast is “nihongo con teppei”

You don’t have much vocab so it will be hard to understand.

So how about this idea? Don’t worry what he is saying, but, try to understand how each sentence is conjugated, and see if you can hear what the verb was, even if you don’t know that verb yet.
