PSA Rakuten Mobile: Resident Card 1 Year Validity Requirement Abolished

Good news! You can now sign up for Rakuten Mobile even if your resident card expires in just a few days. Rakuten Mobile used to require at least a year remaining on your resident card, but not anymore!

Rakuten Mobile perks:

1) Your monthly fee depends on how much data you use per month!
Up to 3 GB per month: 980 yen (1,078 yen incl tax)
3GB-20GB per month: 1,980 yen (2,178 yen incl tax)
20GB or more per month: 2,980 yen (3,178 yen incl. tax)
\*In order to provide a fair service, restrictions on transmission speed may be
implemented.

2) You will receive a maximum of 16 times the usual number of Rakuten Points when
shopping at Rakuten Ichiba if you also subscribe to Rakuten Mobile and use other Rakuten
services!

3) Free unlimited domestic calls!
If you use the Rakuten Link App, all domestic calls (calls placed to other phone numbers
in Japan) will be free! This includes calls made to landlines.
\*Some numbers such as “Navi dial” will not be included.

4) The Rakuten Mobile network area has covered over 97% of Japan’s population!
We are aiming for 100% population coverage in the near future.
\*The population coverage ratio is calculated based on the number of the approx. 500m
zones used in the national census which have area coverage of more than 50%. Please
check the coverage map for current coverage.

  1. Are you a Rakuten dev who’s required to have people sign up? Don’t be shy give people your referral code

  2. Haha, they are realllllly desperate, eh?

They are hemorrhaging users due to terrible service, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them shut down in a few years.

  3. This is good news indeed! Those requirements can be a pain when you have less than one year left.

  5. You should’ve stopped at the first statement to make it less like an ad. Now you only needed to pose with a phone with big smile .

  6. The free domestic calls using the app is not really that great, many times I try to use it the call quality is too poor or cuts out.

  7. I guess that 3% of non covered area includes all indoor spaces in Tokyo. Yeah, I’ll pass 🙂

  8. Awful carrier. Don’t know if they dropped the whole Rakuten Link thing, but the norm was dropped calls, calls not put through (rings on the caller side, no call on the handset), general poor reception, ‘unlimited’ Internet capped at 5GB in poor signal areas (which is just about everywhere).
