Maintain bank account in Japan after leaving for credit card repayment

I will be leaving Japan for good in 2 months. I’m aware of lots of things to be done, but the one troubling me the most now is my credit card debt – a considerable amount due to recent spending on flight ticket, visa fees, health insurance, etc…

I was thinking on how can I still regularly repay my credit card because most banks will automatically freeze my account once I am unable to submit my residence card or my mails were returned. Also, most credit card companies don’t allow repayment using foreign banks (only local banks).

My residence card will expire in September this year. I was thinking to open a much more ‘lenient’ bank account in which I can regularly transfer funds into it so that my credit card company can regularly deduct the payment from it. What recommendations do redditors here have? I was thinking Sony Bank – is it good?

Additionally, I was looking for it but couldn’t exactly find it. Are balance transfer cards not a thing in Japan? I was thinking to do a balance transfer to restructure my debt.

In short – how to maintain a bank account in Japan after leaving to repay credit card debt?

Thank you very much! \^\^

You don’t.Japan has strict rules that banks have to follow to prevent money laundering and stuff like that.

You best option is to leave it open and wish they never request you to submit the residence card.

Back in 2011, I left Japan and left my MUFJ and Japan Post bank account open and came back 1.5 year later and everything was still open lol.
