this is probably a stupid question and sorry if it is but i am very confused. I see people saying they moved and are living in japan but i also see you need a visa to live in japan. but from my knowledge visas expire so how are people able to move without them expiring? i am kinda young so my knowledge about this type of stuff is limited. also i read the visa wiki and didnt really see much explaining my question or maybe i missed it.

Visa is only for entry via the airport, once you are living in Japan, you get a residence card/status. You renew it at the immigration center.
You can renew it.
You obtain permanent residency, or naturalize to Japan (naturalization requires you to renounce your other nationalities though).
If your primary purpose for living in Japan hasn’t changed, you can apply for an extension. The form is here: https://www.isa.go.jp/en/applications/procedures/16-3.html
If your primary purpose for living in Japan has changed and your current status of residence is no longer appropriate then you apply for a change of status. The form is here: https://www.isa.go.jp/en/applications/procedures/16-2.html
