I’ve been talking to my friends about getting my TEFL and moving to japan, one of them says they banned consoles such as ps/xbox. Is this true because the only thing I see is them making modding illegal and that was 2019 but there are still sales of Xbox series s/x. He’s confusing me to an extreme point someone please tell me what’s right and wrong 😂.

Your friend is probably confusing Japan for China and isn’t especially informed since China officially ended their console ban in 2015. Both Nintendo and Sony to some extent still are Japanese companies and their consoles were designed in Japan. Wouldn’t make a lot of sense to create consoles in a country that bans them.
My friend smuggled an XBOX in once and customs found it. He appealed for about 8 months but in the end he was hung for it. Be very careful.
I’m sure your friend has played Japanese games (between Zelda, Mario, Pokemon, Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Tales, Dark Souls, Persona, Metal Gear, Animal Crossing, Street Fighter, Tekken, Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, Megaman, Fire Emblem, and all the racing and sports games that come out every year).
Honestly, it would be pretty weird if someone plays video games but doesn’t at least occasionally notice Japanese console titles, especially those from Nintendo, Square-Enix, Sony, Namco, Capcom, Konami, and FromSoft.
Don’t worry:

Bruh. What planet is your friend on that he thinks Japan banned video games…
