What should I expect from a skype interview?

I have my first ever TEFL interview coming up on skype and I’m unsure what to expect. Researching a bit, some info out there says all they are looking for is if you’re white and can hold a conversation. Other info says the interview will have a mock lesson and a grammar quiz. I’m wondering what to expect and maybe some stuff to prep! For now, I guess i’ll review some stuff that i’ve forgotten from my celta (too much gaming over the summer lol) and brush up my answers on the top 20 interview questions.

  1. Depends if its a recruiter/school employee/ eikawa owner/japanese/foreigner.

Regardless of who you’re speaking too, ask questions, don’t stress it and remember it’s a chance to find out if you want to work for them too. So while it’s always natural to put the best version of yourself forwards honesty is useful too. You don’t want to start a new job and hate it for the duration.

  2. I came in to make sure you prepare a mock lessons or something like it. Looks like you were made aware.

Always prepare for a mock lessons.

  3. Contact the company to clarify if there is a mock lesson, and also ask the general length of the interview. You might expect an interview to take 30-60 minutes, but some places somehow prefer 3-4 hours (why?). Either way, it’s not a big secret, so if you ask them the approximate length they should tell you, and if they don’t, that’s good to know now, before you start working there.

Other general questions you might get for any English teaching job interview include… Why did you come to Japan? What’s your teaching background? How’s your Japanese? What ages would you imagine yourself teaching? When can you start? Do you have a driver’s license? Why do you want to work here? Do you have any questions for us?
