Hi everyone , I’m currently a student in the UK studying mathematics. I am thinking of applying to the University of Tokyo/Kyoto University for a masters in computer science/maths. I’m currently studying Japanese and will be taking the JLPT soon. Besides doing well in the entrance exams and having letters of recommendation, I was wondering what sort of grades I’d need to get in. It doesn’t explicitly say what grades I need on their websites. I’d assume they’d only consider applicants with a first class honours degree. My university maths department is ranked in the top 20 in the world. If I have a good proposal, recommendation letters, and do well in their entrance exam, would a 2:1 degree land me a good chance of getting in?

Grad school in Japan usually requires a professor recommendation and passing an entrance exam/interview. So long as your prospective professor is convinced of your skills, by grades or whatever criteria, he should recommend you.

The answer is yes, but you might wanna get to know with professors there before the exam by sending an email. You don’t really need a recommendation letter (at least i didn’t need it, sorry if things are different for international students but that’s not a common practice in Japanese universities) but it’s strongly recommended that you get in touch with profs who are familiar with your field and have potentials to become your direct advisor.
Why don’t you apply for a Monbusho scholarship for grad school? Check the Japan Embassy’s website for information. I am a recipient and studied at Nihon University Grad. School of Economics. I ended up staying in Japan working for a US company. Am now retired. That’s my story and I’m sticking with it.
