Newly built apartment, but it’s close to a school. Experiences?

Im just asking her because I honestly need opinions… or something… because big decisions is not my forte.

This will be my first real apartment in Japan even though I’ve been here for 8 years… yeah I know.

I found one thats newly built, reinforced concrete and on a relatively high floor (7th).

interior is nice and it looks great!

One problem. In front of the balcony (just by the bedroom) is a big park, after the park a junior high school. With just a big open space between me and the school Im a bit sceptic. I don’t mind sounds, because let’s face it. living in a big city thats just a reality but what bothers me are chimes…

I work irregular hours as well so im mostly worried about mornings tbh… nights…. whatever.

But anyone that is living or have lived close to a school that would like to share their experience? you regret moving there\`?

  1. We live across an open field from a kindergarten school. Expect a lot of noise when school is in session or when there are extracurricular activities after school.

  2. Were you living in fake apartments until now, or what?

I live opposite an elementary school, separated by a large-ish field (yay Tokyo agriculture), it’s a mild noise source, which I barely notice. If at all, mainly in the warmer seasons when I have windows open, mostly announcements on the PA system, emergency drills, and sports activities (also at weekends) until darkness sets in.

Have lived in much worse environments, including ca. 50 metres from a railway crossing (BING BING BING GATCHA GATCHA GATCHA and WAILING SIREN FROM EMERGENCY VEHICLES FROM NEARBY FIRE STATION WAITING TO CROSS from early am until midnight) and before that 24/7 drone from elevated highway.

    No particular regrets.

  3. The dormitory I live in is separated from an elementary school by a field.

I pretty much only hear the bells, even then it’s mild.

  4. I lived near a school when I first came here and it was an absolute nightmare, you may be severely underestimating the noise. For example, when they were practising for their culture festival it was just days and days of non stop music blasting from morning, not to mention the terrible instrument practises. It’s basically the opposite of what you want – quiet nights, noisy days. I wouldn’t recommend it.

  5. I live in a house right outside of a school. The land was my husband’s grandfather’s that he donated to the school so it’s extremely close to my house. I can hear fire drill announcements, bells, requests for teachers to come to the staff office, club practice, gym class, and it’s pretty loud for the hour when school gets out. The good thing is that it’s pretty quiet at night, more quiet than other places, and I can usually predict when it’s going to be loud. I used to teach at a school and am a stay at home mom now so I honestly don’t mind the noise, it’s nostalgic for me. It’s also probably safer since there’s teachers patrolling and cameras outside the school facing my house. It’s loud but our house is basically on the school grounds, I can’t imagine it would be too bad with the distance you’re describing.
