I visited Japan 5 years ago. I walked into a normal looking bar in Nagoya, had a couple drinks and some food.. when I asked for the check I noticed an extra charge (think it was about 300 yen) for ‘the chair’..
Is this considered normal in Japan? I know it’s not a large amount of money but I’m curious.

Very normal in bars. Usually the fee comes with a small snack. It is called “otoshi” . You can Google this term for more info.
Yes. Similar to a cover charge elsewhere. We noticed a lot of the bars in Golden Gai in Tokyo have this charge and it’s displayed on the door/window as you enter.
Cover/table/chair charges are common. There’s nothing wrong with asking before sitting down and ordering.
