International Driving Permit (IDP) Validity

Hi MOD, I’ve checked the history but I can’t find what I’m looking for. Hence, the post.

Hi everyone, I just had my visa changed the other day into a long term resident. I came in last year to Japan with a valid IDP in order to drive around.

Since I’m already a resident, can I still use the IDP for now while applying for a Japanese driver’s license?

Thank you!

  1. Technically, you’re not supposed to.

Realistically, it’s unlikely to be a problem but always has the potential to.

  2. Your IDP is valid for 1 year from the date you entered Japan. It doesn’t matter if you entered as a tourist or a resident.

However, now that you’re a resident you are expected to convert your license ASAP. Carry your passport with you while you’re driving, because if you get stopped by the police they *will* check your entry date.

  3. Technically you’re allowed to. But don’t expect the cops here to know the rules because they change fairly often enough for some cops to not catch up on new rules. There are some people who get in trouble when they’re not supposed to. The best way to avoid this is to get a Japanese license. If you can convert easily, there’s no reason not to.
