Moving with a Highly Skilled Visa – Spouse work

Hi all,

I’m considering relocating to Japan on a HSP visa but I wanted to better understand some details which could really affect my choices.
I am a Software Engineer with a Masters so speaking to a recruiter and doing research I can qualify quite easily for the 80 points for the HSP visa which would qualify me for PR within a year. I’ve heard generally people advise against this visa because you are constrained to one company but my main consideration is my husband. He is also a Software Engineer but has an unrelated degree so he can’t get work sponsorship.

– From my understanding, going for the HSP will allow him to work in this field full time but not unskilled work. Any other caveats I should watch out for?
– Would he also have the freedom to study?
– I’m also curious what the path to PR is like for the spouse in this situation.

edit: based on [government requirements](https://www.moj.go.jp/isa/content/930003492.pdf) a spouse of a permanent resident only requires 3+yrs married and 1yr lived in Japan. So it sounds like he can get PR once I get successfully get PR

I’ve seen little tidbits from users on here who’ve been burned by the complicated nature of this all so wanted to hear any horror stories/words of caution

  1. The degree doesn’t need to be in the same field.

It’s just an immigration requirement for a work visa but otherwise, as long as he does have a degree, could be in underwater basket weaving for all they care, if he lands a job, he can get sponsored.

  2. Keep in mind that the PR screening process generally takes more than 4 months, sometimes up to 1 year. Remember to add that time on top of the 1 year requirement if you do decide to go via the HSP visa.
