Applying for a spouse visa. Do they care what our rent is?

Currently in Japan on a student visa. Planning on applying for a spouse visa this year. My wife is Japanese, and she earns about 400万円 per year. Our rent is quite steep and we get money from our parents to support us while I’m doing my PHD in Japan.

The rent is 20 man per month and we chose this place because her parents wanted us to live close to them (insisted).

Would immigration care what our rent is? Do they ask that far? We can easily get by with a little support from our parents but not sure how much back and forth we have to do with immigration.

  1. No they don’t! We were in a similar situation 2 years ago when I first got my spouse visa. Not a problem

  2. In the questionnaire for spouse visa they do ask the size of your house (1LDK, 2LDK, 3LDK etc) and whether it is rental or not. If it is rental you have to provide the rent as well. This is under お互いの身分事項 -> 配偶者 -> 自宅

Not to say they super care about your rent, but they do want to know.
