Traveling to US with pregnant wife, insurance suggestions?

The wife (Japanese native) and I (American) are traveling to the US for about a month to visit some family before the baby comes. She’s about 19 weeks pregnant and will be about 26 weeks when we come home.

Has anyone gotten travel insurance that covers pregnancy issues? I’ve done a lot of looking around and mostly just hear bad things about all insurance companies, naturally.

I’ve read its best to get a Japanese insurance company, but I can’t find any that explicitly mention pregnancy issues. Does it usually just fall under “medical”? Sorry I know this has been asked a few times, but I wanted to ask anyway. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Also she has an EPOS credit card, but I don’t believe that covers much and we didn’t buy the tickets with it. Thank you for any help!

  1. I think you needed purchase the tickets with a credit card that has travel insurance as a benefit to get coverage. I read on this sub that health insurance here will cover up to 70% of the cost of the procedure of what it cost here. The rest will be out-of-pocket costs on you.

There isn’t too many options for US travel insurance to cover travelers within the US, when I needed to visit for a short time to renew my driver’s license. I would look up insuremytrip and squaremouth for insurance comparison site, but I’m not sure if they will cover your wife.

I was at Haneda last month, I saw travel insurance window staffed, so maybe you can ask for coverage at the international terminal at your airport.

  2. Unfortunately, medical issue concerning pregnancy (like childbirth, premature birth when you’re overseas) are not covered by travel insurance. I just went and take a look at my credit card travel insurance fine print, and it clearly states that. Some insurance cover for early pregnancy (up until 21 weeks), but after that you’re just not covered.

But it’s still better you get travel insurance just in case you need treatment for other medical issues though. I guess this is why doctor do not recommend traveling when you’re pregnant. Too much risk involved.
