Most surprising place to get good coffee in Japan

McDonald’s

Not joking.

I normally just brew it myself via V60 or French Press, using the James Hoffman methods, but decided to get some coffee while away from home at Aeon mall. Wife insisted McDonald’s has really good coffee, and I insisted she’s nuts.

I was wrong.

I’ve never had coffee at McDonald’s in the U.S. so not sure how it compares. But here, the McDonald’s coffee is much better than you might suspect.

Is it as good as the coffee at a specialty cafe? Not if it’s a good cafe, but for a fast food joint, it was much more satisfying than I would’ve believed possible.

Any other places that surprised you with their coffee?

  1. 7-11 coffee is very good for 110 yen. It was the impetus for starting the trip down the rabbit hole of brewing coffee at home.

I now have an Aeropress and a Timemore hand grinder.

  2. I’ll drink McDonald’s coffee but it’s not the best cheap place for my taste.

When I came back from Australia, the only cheap latte I could drink for a while was from 7-11, so that gets my vote.

  3. If you use the McD’s app, you can sometimes get a coupon so that M size coffee is 100 yen. It’s a great deal.

  4. I’ve never tried McDonald’s coffee so I’m skeptical. A major problem with McDonald’s coffee is that you’re in a McDonald’s. I’ll stick with Komeda’s Coffee and the local 喫茶店 here.

  5. Of all the quick/cheap options of black coffee McDonald’s is really really good. They announced a new blend they will offer from today but I haven’t had the chance to try it yet.

Second would be New Days as they use Dotour beans which I think is the best coffee chain in Japan.

  6. Doutor’s coffee is stupidly good for a chain place, and stacks up well even compared to some cafes.

  7. Wtf… McDonald’s coffee is awful. I still drink it often, but it’s terrible. The espresso in the “mccafe” shops is OK though – I mean, still bad but it’s espresso, unlike the fake espresso you get in most places.

But I agree with the guy who said Doutor is not half bad.

  8. Surprisingly, McDonald’s coffee is also decent in the US too. I mean, it’s coffee that you drink and are like, “Hm, that’s coffee. Nice.” So, for cost and convenience, it’s great!

7/11 Coffee is fine too. I actually love picking up an ice coffee while sweating to death in summer.

  9. My local McDonald’s must have had a bad batch, cause the last one I had was really weak in flavor. Maybe I should try again

  10. Yeeeeah nah I’m going to have to disagree here. McDonald’s coffee is awful, it’s so bitter and tastes like they roasted the shit out of the coffee beans they use.

  11. Hate to sound like a snob, but if your V60 brews can’t compete with MCDonalds and 7/11 there’s something badly wrong with the brews.
