Why is there so many young persons having free time during the business hours ?

I’m going to Tokyo when I can find some time while I am working remotely with my laptop and I just realized that there’s always many peoples in the train, stations, shopping malls,…

Currently in a train going to Tokyo from Saitama mostly 20-30 years old women by themselves where I would expect only retired elders to be there in the business hours.

I’m not saying it’s wrong, it’s good for the economy and it feel nice to not being alone but just “How come?”
I expected everyone to be working or at school.

Have you been wondering the same or am I just misjudging ?

  1. You realize that 9-5 is the working hours for only a percentage of the population right? Many many people work swing shifts/night shifts/weekends/odd schedules/etc.. They could be on their way to work, on their way to a meeting, coming home from work, going to the store/shopping, on their day off. You’re a victim of your bias – you work these hours so obviously everyone else does too.

And you’re talking about a metro area of 35 million people. It’s honestly surprising there aren’t more people in any age group travelling around the city.

  2. > 20-30 years old women

    * Married housewives who don’t work

    * Women who work night shifts

    * Single women who live at home and don’t work

  3. Some people work night jobs. Such as bars, kyabakura. Some people don’t have a job. Same in any country

  4. Not everyone has the 9-5 M-F schedule. Some works in different shifts and some needs to work on sat/sun then have their day off on weekdays.

I am in the same situation with people who have very odd working schedule which requires me to change shift once in a while and my day off depends on how the シフト予定 goes, which means I may have my day off today but next week I might be at work.

  5. I’m just in between my beach resort islands, currently. Needed to pick up some sunscreen and a new pair of Ray Bans on my way to my other private jet. Sorry to bother you.

  6. Some industry designate days other than sunday and saturday as day off. Example is the property biz

  7. I’ve thought about this too. Statistically, a very large portion of people are now “non-regular” employees. They could be temps, on contracts, dispatch, etc. I have seen stats as high as 38%. Non-regular employees are much more likely to be women.

Also – old people and students.

So, I think that’s probably the answer. Students, people with different hours, old people.

  8. I always think that when I visit the US.

In Japan all attractions, restaurants, museums are super crowded on weekends and holidays, and deserted on weekdays. On the US it’s much better balanced, with places still busy on weekdays and not overcrowded on weekends.

  9. I work a 4 days a week, 12 hours a day, on a rotating schedule. About every three weeks or so my days off end up being tuesday wednesday friday.

They may also be remote workers like you.

  10. I had a similar observation before the pandemic, when the most clients of cafes were women in their late 20s and 30s

  11. I have lots of free time during business hours, I work Monday to Friday but not regular 9-5 hours. If I have a morning and/or afternoon off, I often walk around somewhere in Tokyo…it’s a Wednesday and I’m walking around Shibuya/Harajuku right now.

  12. The population is huge. Even if one in hundred has totally flexible schedule it would already make a crowd.

  13. Non-chain retailing frequently has set weekdays off to compensate for weekend business hours. I used to work in a place that had Sunday-Monday closed, so Monday was my “go into town do errands” day since every major intersection would be somewhat less crowded (still tons of people tho).

If you look through the small shops in your neighborhood, you may see a lot that have the same days off (say, Tues-Wed). That’s fairly common all over the country.

  14. Aren’t you one of those young people taking the train, walking in the station, presumably finding your way inside a mall to go to the cafe to sit down with your laptop and work? All this during business hours?

  15. Stop hating BRUH let us live BRUH we to got lives to BRUH you know what BRUH I’m typing a twitter post about you BRUH now your canceled BRUH and now your fired BRUH now your life is ruined BRUH

  16. TFW OP is working remotely and struggles with seeing other people who might be doing the same. Haha.

  17. I work part time to kill time…living off dividends and other income stream. Sorry I’m overcrowding the train

  18. I know right how dare people be in the train under the age of 45 during 9-5. I really hate shift works most of all… They with their having off during the day and work all night.
