How many max words can be realistically learned in one day?

Hi guys, I’m about to have long holidays and can literally dedicate hours and hours and hours to learning a ton of words.

Realistically what is a max limit of words that can be learned and memorized in one day assuming I have all 24 hours?

I know this is a crazy question but would love to hear the feedback. For reference I already know Chinese.

  1. I’d say your max should be 30; outside of that you mainly need to be immersing, that’s ultimately way more important

  2. Don’t spend your time doing specfic word memorization, remember them by reading and listening a lot. And use anki, for me 40new/day takes 30 minutes, I dont want to spend more than that.

  3. The maximum I have ever done was 80/day for ~2 weeks in order to clear my ever growing backlog. My observations from that were:

    – I had and still have almost the same retention for those cards that I usually have when I do 15/day (I tagged them, so I can still tell).

    – It takes at least(!) as many days for your reviews to come down again as you spend on learning additional words, so plan accordingly. If you have 2 weeks of extra time, only do max 1 week with additional cards.

    – I hated doing it after 5 days already and I will never do that many cards again. Your time is much better spent on just reading more.

  4. Learning japanese for 15 months now. According to morphman, I know almost 10k words (K 9988, V 12271). Currently doing 50 cards/day. Retention is 80 to 90%.

According to my time record app, I usually spend almost 4 hours/day for anki. For watching drama & anime, its around 3 hours/day. (I know I spend quite a lot time for anki).

Aside from that, I always listen to jpop/ jrock. Follow japnanese talents & 声優 on twitter. Sometimes, I read articles on yahoo.

  5. I did 150 new words a day for 50 days straight a year and half ago, it took me roughly 2 hours every day to do reviews + new words. One could probably do much more if they have more free time. Be careful though as this method doesn’t mean that once you learn it then it sticks forever, you will likely need to keep putting 2 hours a day for months before the reviews become scattered enough. If you already know Chinese you could easily do 500 minimum a day.

  6. If you do RTK 1, review it a lot even after you’ve completed it and try reading alot, words that contain kanji can be learned exponentially faster and with very little effort.

Doing RTK 1 correctly will take patience though.

  7. My standard was 100 words a day with about an hour spent on reviewing. Now, after half a year from beginning sentence mining, the hardest part is actually to find 100 unknown words somewhere rather than to learn them
