Need help on where to go for one night nearish to Kyoto or Tokyo!

Hello all!

Planning a 10 day trip to Japan this April.

Current plan is:

3 nights in Tokyo

1 night in Hakone (for my birthday! \[not that that’s relevant\])

3 nights in Kyoto

(NIGHT WHERE I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO: My sister is buddhist and is going to Mt. Koya aka Koyasan, and I’m not sure I want to go with her? Wondering what to do on this one night)

Have considered:

\*Checking out Naoshima (one of the art islands, although i’m told I might need more time than 1 night)

\*Kyoto by the sea

\*A night in Osaka

\*Should I just go to Koyasan?

And then for our final night before flying out of Tokyo, we’re back in Tokyo.

Open to ANY AND ALL suggestions that are within a 3 or so hour train ride from Kyoto or Tokyo. Thank you and excited to be in this group!

  1. Your problem with Mt Koya is it’s accessible via Osaka. So for a day trip from Kyoto travel time could be like 3hrs. So you could be transiting in total over 4 hours. 8 hours return travel is a lot for a day trip. I’ve just finished a month in Japan and we did some overnight trips to onsen towns and the travel required is really tiring just for one night.

Personally in particular if it’s your first trip, I’d recommend you tag on an extra night in Tokyo, there’s plenty of day trips like Kawagoe or Kamakura where you can see lots of authentic Japan.
