Is it correct to say お疲れ様でした to my japanese class 先生 when class ends? Or is that phrase more suitable for co-workers to say to each other?

Was wondering about this.

Context: Someone has wished to be a younger brother. Previously he was the older brother. He has this idea that everything in life will be easier if he is the 弟. Somehow his wish was granted.
I’m a bit confused what that なと does or why it’s there. I would expect something like だと and I’ve seen など but not after だ. So not sure about that.
