Bathtub

is reheating the used water cheaper than filling it with new water?

  1. Yes, because it’s not as cold as fresh water, so it costs less to heat it up, and you don’t have to pay for the water.

  2. Afaik, my home hasn’t seen a major difference in electricity / gas / water between the two, but we also haven’t done any real scientific testing. The reality is that every home with different bath, heating type, water costs etc will likely have a different anecdotal story. But! I’m ok with being wrong. Hopefully some real pros will jump in!

  3. Disclaimer: I have never tried reheating bath water and didn’t even know that was a thing.

How are you doing that in the first place?
Is your bath tub heated? Do you have something like an immersion coil that you dunk into the bath tub? In either of those cases I’d imagine the difference in efficiency between your regular water heater and… whatever keeps your bath water warm… would dictate whether or not it makes more sense to reheat instead of using fresh water (given that you cover your tub to prevent too much heat from escaping).

Also there’d be the question of *how much* cheaper it is, and whether that’s worth reusing bath water. Just from this little thought experiment I’d imagine the difference is marginal.
