I wrote earlier this month about my little fear of becoming an alcoholic. Since then I have reduced my alcohol usage and I don’t crave it. I think I was just scared with the consistency of drinking I was doing. I am still functioning fine and still hanging out with my friends. Which leaves me with another question. Why do some restaurants and bars require you to order a drink? Aside from water, they require one drink per person which does not happen in the states. And I am not a fan of sweet drinks so I am constantly stuck with a gingerly that I never finish.

Because drinks are dirt cheap and have huge profit margins. Food doesn’t. Restaurants need to survive.
Good for you. I just order oolong or jasmine tea if a drink is required
I always get tea or a ginger ale. As for places that have both お通し and one drink system, well I just avoid them lol. It’s a bandaid on a subpar business model.
Never been to a place that demands I order a drink.
You’re doing great!

There are definitely places that do this in the US, while not always there it’s not uncommon to go to some kind of event at a bar that has a 1 drink minimum. But I agree with the other person, just get a tea.
