Which three novels give the best insight into modern Japanese society?

My friend asked me which books (fiction) they should read before moving to J. to give them a better insight into what is really going on behind the facade of their colleagues and neighbours.
And I went “erm… well anything by Haruki Murakami and er.. Goodnight Punpun by Inio Asano ??” But I’m not one for reading so thought I’d ask
