Where to live in Tokyo?

Hello Everyone,

im 19 years old and am about to do my work and travel in japan(starting april).I do not speak any Japanese but will do my best to learn the basics before I go. I will be there for 6 months and will be moving from city to city(probably Tokyo,Osaka,Kyoto).

I have had a hard time figuring out where i should live, because the city is just so big. It is hard for me to find any information on it either. My main guide is that i will be going to a Kickboxing gym in every city as a hobby and i would like that to be in walking distance…but they are also all around tokyo.

I will be staying in a sharehouse and am just wondering if there are any big differnces in the Wards.

If you dont have an answer then maybe someone knows how or where i could research better?

(i would also love suggestions for the other two cities of course but im going to tokyo first)

thank you very much!

  1. Searching kickboxing gyms on Google maps might help start your search. Doing this in both Kanto and Kansai will help you narrow down your search area for where to stay. It would also help to list and prioritize other things you’d like to see or do while you’re here.

I don’t have any extended experience with Tokyo, so I can’t give a great deal of detail on that, but Osaka has some options around Namba+Tennoji, which are fairly popular areas with plenty to do (food, shopping, activities). There are also some gyms closer to Kobe.

Kyoto, your best bet is to stay closer to downtown. South side isn’t so interesting. East side is very crowded with tourists on weekends. North side is mostly residential and University students. West side is not so crowded but also has less to offer for entertainment (though it’s very easy to get downtown). Kyoto also has flat rate buses. Take advantage of that while you’re in town.
