I feel pretty rude just walking out and telling them thank you (wish I knew how to write it in Japanese, but I’m illiterate in that language). What are some good things I can tell them?

After paying, right before I leave I sometimes say ごちそうさまでした (gochisousama deshita )
Or during the payment process I might say すごい美味しかったです (sugoi oishikatta desu) – I haven’t seen any natives say this when they’re paying but I do it anyway because, like you, I’d like to show my appreciation sometimes
