I have encountered the same smell while living in both Kyoto and Fukui-ken. I have not smelt it…

Honestly, I wouldn’t overthink it.
I would recommend bring as little as possible. Most thing’s really are not worth the efforts of lugging them all the way here.

Can you tell us
1) how long you are going? (what does no return anytime soon mean?)
2) are you personally going or asking for a gift idea? (gift ideas would be green tea powder or skin care products like face masks)
3) is the country you are going to of a language that you are more or less able to understand?
E.g. my standard advice for a 1-2 year absence from Japan would be
1) haircare/skin care because it is hard to find the right thing without studying ingredients
2) if you are a girl, bras due to sizing differences or certain care products if you prefer the ones here
3) electric plug adapters (because I find them cheaper and easier to find in Japan than in other countries)
If you go without return in sight, honestly the best is to accept that you have to build new wherever you go next instead of trying to move a lot of product and only take some for personal comfort rather practical need.
Before I go I have a little list, one thing would be a nice chef knife! There’s some interesting ones here with apparently really good quality. Other than that, a trip to Daiso to get lots of small quality of life things for a good price!
