I enjoy a nice sit in the airport toilets, although it isn’t often that I am at one. My most common go-to squat when out and about has become a nice and out of the way suit shop.
Good places aren’t too hard to find, but I absolutely hate any drugstore bathroom. It’s not even that they aren’t clean, but they are just depressing and clinically bright white. It feels like I’m in the movie Cube 2: Hyper-Poop.

When in public or in private, please don’t do it at r/Japanlife.
I would imagine the worst spot would have to be in your pants…
No, no. Not you, in your pants, but me.
I’m sure that’d be traumatic for both of us.
Showa-era public park squat toilets covered in truck driver splatters and chikan kumo.
The best bathrooms when out are pachinko bathrooms. Know where you’re going. Go straight for the bath room – always clean – straight out.
Try roadside food stall in Indonesia.
If you ask for bathroom, the proprietor takes you to a room with no lights, tiny window, a large bucket of water, no drain, and a thumb-sized pipe going out through the wall.., the pipe is horizontal.
Needless to say, we didn’t solve that riddle, just jumped back in the car/taxi and held it in for couple more hours…
Is that you Costanza?
*They’re selling coffee, bran muffins…you’re surrounded by reading material. It’s entrapment!*
Almost all Japanese public toilets are fine.
Even combini ones.
Worst would be some of the older park toilets….they are squat ones.
Was in a shitter in Canal City, Fukuoka, today and jeezo it was awful. Proper stench and for some reason, there was a stall and a stand-up pisser next to each other, no divider, but the toilet was a one-person occupancy one. I always regret using a high-traffic shitter.
spread it across the pavement like an abstract art piece
The toilets in tiny neighborhood parks are not my ideal place to go. But sometimes nature calls and that’s the next place in sight.
This dude shits
Assuming you mean proper toilets, I pick the ones by the parks and playgrounds. They’re so OPEN that I can see the squat toilets from outside when I pass by them. Also these are super popular between local taxi drivers, so they’re surprisingly used often.
For best ones, I guess department stores and office buildings.
The ports potty’s at Fuji rock…. Made sure to walk the extra 30min to the Naeba prince hotel instead
The squat toilets on the JR Shōnan-Shinjuku line or Utsunomiya line. They are usually dirty and it’s hard to squat to take a shit while the rickety train is moving
Worst one is easily the squat toilets on the Yokosuka Line E217’s. It’s a park toilet that sways.
My go-to for a proper clean and tranquil poop are mid-to-upscale hotels, especially if there’s a conference. Little to no security and always clean.
KFC.

Not Kansai airport. At least prior to corona, there’s so few stalls available that people bang on the doors…
Definitely in JR Shinagawa station. I think with the amount of people coming through there they just cannot keep up with keeping it clean and often times it shows.
Pretty much all of the public toilets I’ve been to in Japan have been fantastic, especially compared to where I come from (usa). Worst though have to be any squat toilet. They’d be ok if they were actually clean but they’re usually not; they’ve usually got more splatter of both types than any regular seat toilet.
Or any toilet (squat or not) that’s outside/exposed. In the summer there’s 100% going to be a giant spider/hornet or two/mukade/cockroach just chilling.
Anywhere without a Washlet.
