[Tepco to seek government OK for household rate hike for first time since 2012 | The Japan Times](https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2023/01/21/business/tepco-energy-power-rates/)
Tepco joining five other major power companies — Tohoku Electric Power, Hokuriku Electric Power, Chugoku Electric Power, Shikoku Electric Power and Okinawa Electric Power — sought government approval to raise their regulated household electricity rates by an average of between 28% and 45% in April.
The article explains since our current rates are calculated in two parts, this would affect the non fuel surge portion.
If you have the ability to negotiate an increase in your salary next year, do it; otherwise, things are going to get rougher.

They can all eat my fucking ass. I don’t make enough for this shit.
Home owners: time to invest into solar panels.
Future home owners: don’t stinge with house insulation, and invest in solar panels.
For all, good luck…
I’m seriously thinking of getting a kerosene heater due to my electric bill.
30% holy shit. This summer is gonna be hell.
FYI There is also a subsidy for households and private business starting next month

Every time I leave my house, I make sure every single appliance is unplugged, except the fridge-freezer. My bill has never been over 9000 yen for a month. My house is a two-storey 5LDK. I use a wood stove + kerosene for heating. I use an electric blanket in winter on my bed. I have one A/C installed in the dining room, which I only use in winter. I use gas for cooking.
I wonder what people are doing to rack up bills of 30,000 yen in a month?! Turning multiple A/Cs on and off throughout the day? Leaving lights on?
This will definitely encourage people to have more kids.
I paid 23k for my 25m apartment in electricity. (One room, one airco trying not to freeze) It’s actually slowly becoming not worth it to stay in Japan because of this shit. In Europe where energy is bad, my family pays 180 euro for a 200m apartment in electric and heating combined…
what the actual f….I honestly believe Japan is over. At this point they just fucking with everyone. And how much wage is increasing again? 2.0%ish? huh????
And guess what? Energy price increase = everything else will also follow and we will see even more increase in everything. (food, electronic, clothes…) There’s no stop to this madness. I’m not sure what is the future of Japan. A lot of Japanese are already struggling and I just can’t imagine any good outcome of this.
From the article: *”If the planned application is approved…”*
So does anyone know if these approvals are just a formality or does the government actually check them and revise them according to the state of the national economy?
What I’m trying to say is can their application to increase it be denied?
People laughed at me for having my aircon at 16 during Summer. However throughout winter I havent turned it on. This summer Ill probably have my aircon at 28 though but still wont be turning it on in winter.
I come from a terraced house in north England where putting milk on the kitchen counter freezes it. I imagine people from arizona have low summer bills.
This is not great news, but how are y’all racking up such high energy bills? For 2 people in an older 2LDK mansion in Osaka I paid *at most* ¥15,000 total for gas/electricity. That’s running heater/cooler, humidifier, tv, game consoles, big PC, forgetting to turn off lights occasionally, etc.
Didn’t use the aircon last summer and use it moderately this winter paired with kotatsu. Yet to feel the pain too badly.
Remember when all-electric homes were the hot trend?
When are they spinning up those sweet sweet nuclear reactors?
To be honest I’m not that surprised. I still think we have it good compared to Europe, where electricity prices have jumped by 500% in the last year.
It sucks and we should absolutely be complaining about it, but it’s not like it’s been done without reason.
The alternative, of course, is to keep buying gas from Russia. I wonder how popular that one would be – I’ll go ahead and assume most people would rather pay the higher bill.
Crazy – My electric bill was already up 50% from last year for same consumption.
Wood stoves go buuuuuuurn.
