Replacing phone cable with Ethernet

Then new place I’m moving to has three rooms, each of which has an outlet with two phone jacks and an ISDN jack. The living room has them in the same outlet as NTT’s fiber jack.

I want to install a router/switch next to the fiber port and have wired Ethernet to the other rooms: the idea would be to replace the existing phone cable with Cat 5E or 6 and use the same jacks.

Is this a job for an electrician? Can the ISDN jacks be reused directly (I believe they are RJ45) or do I need to replace them too?

  1. I wired up my house with ethernet a few years ago.

ISDN jacks should be RJ-11 (same as phone).

It doesn’t touch mains power so it is not necessary to hire an electrician. Having said that, you will need some equipment like crimping tools and RJ-45 connectors/ethernet cable.

You’ll need to figure out a way to get the CAT cable through the conduit into the rooms. The pros use a wire-threader, but I used nylon string and suction from a vacuum cleaner.

Might be cheaper just to hire an electrician for the job instead of doing it yourself. Note that if this is a rental, you will need to return it to the previous state before moving out.

  2. The isdn jacks may work but it is probably not cat 5e speced. It depend a lot on how it is terminated if it can be reused or if it would even work well.

Better to find new jack that fit the wall plate, it will probably terminate with some sort of punch down slots. I wouldn’t do cable snaking from the plates with plugs crimped on but if you do you should use cable with stranded conductors. Most of the spools you will find have solid conductors, which is what you should use for punching down into jacks and patch panels.
