Employer of Record to move to Japan

I’m an EU citizen and I work-full remote (software engineering) from EU country A. My employer is located in EU country B and used an EOR Service (Deel) to hire me. Company policies highly encourage us to work from abroad, and there are people employed worldwide on different time zones.
I wonder, wouldn’t it be possible for my company to hire me through an EOR in Japan instead and sponsor my visa? I believe the EOR we use does provides this type of service, but I wanted to ask whether other people actually did it.

It’s certainly possible. The term more commonly used in Japan is Global Employment Organization (GEO), but the services are the same. If your company already has a contract with an EOR/GEO, you definitely have a leg up.

Not many folks here have actually gone through the process. I *think* u/onigiri_chan is the only regular who’s done it.

  2. My US company uses a GEO to pay me here in Japan. I have a spouse visa, but I’m pretty sure you can use the GEO to sponsor your visa.

  3. I think this is very interesting because GEO are pretty expensive for the company.

Keep in mind that if you do find a EOR in Japan and need to switch to it, you are essentially quitting one company for another and all your seniority perks may reset to day 0.
