Tax implications of having a full time remote US job in Japan?

Does anyone know the tax implications of working a full-time remote US job? I was on an engineering visa before I left, but I got married while I was over there so I don’t think it should be a problem legally if I were to return on a spousal visa. I don’t know how to navigate this with a prospective US employer though and who the tax burden falls on. Obviously, I’d need to pay Japanese income taxes, but are there any gotchas from the US side that I should be aware of?

  1. Might be best for your company to hire a lawyer for this one but you will most likely need to be taken on as a Contractor rather than as a full-time employee of theirs.

If they keep you as an employee, they would need to also establish a tax presence in Japan and would be on the hook for any laws related to that. An absolute pain in the ass for a single person.
