Moving to Japan with a Samoyed

Hello! I wanted to know if its too hard to find a place to live with a samoyed in japan? I’ve been reading and lot of people say that the landlords doesn’t like the big breeds and if they do, the rent would cost me a lot. Is it true or this has changed over time?

  1. Depends on the location, depends on the landlord, depends on the building, depends on the lease, etc.

  2. Generally, yes: Landlords aren’t particularly fond of large breeds.

And yeah, a Samoyed is definitely a large dog by Japanese standards. Generally when you see an apartment listing that is “pet friendly” they’re referring to a single cat or a dog <20kg. If your dog is over 20kg, it’s going to make the already difficult task of moving as a pet-owning foreigner even harder.

You can expect to have a ***very*** limited number of landlords willing to work with you, and expect to pay a significant premium in both monthly pet fees and deposits.

Another thing working against you is that you have a big dog that is known to be… Let’s go with “energetic”. Samoyeds are well known for being destructive if they get bored.
