while changing from a working to student visa, can I stay in japan?

hello.

I am on a working visa but it ends next month. I want to switch to a student visa and go to language school but it starts in april. the school told me to contact immigration to see if i can stay in japan from the end of my expiry until the start of my new visa. can I?

Also during this limbo period, can i work? not sure about the rules.

i know calling immigration is best, and I have been. I only have about 30 minutes during weekdays due to my work schedule to call immigration, and my attempts have all failed. I keep getting redirected to an english speaking like for my particular question but it’s always in japanese and i can’t grasp it 100%

please help me 😭 thank you

  1. Is your school willing to give you a visa that matches up with your current expiration date? Because once your current one expires, I don’t believe you’re legally able to stay here unless you’ve already applied for the renewal/change in visa. And if you’re here illegally, you wouldn’t be able to apply for a new one. (I believe.)
