I’m currently a research student at a university in Aichi. I applied to get into a master’s program at the same university, with an N2 JLPT requirement. However, I just got the JLPT results back and I failed. I plan to retake the JLPT N2 again in July, and this time I’m quite certain I can pass. I would like to reapply for grad school next year, though maybe a different school.
However, my current student visa expires on June 30th and I would like to stay in Japan until I reapply, so I need to get a new visa. My current research is in using computer science to assist small farms in Japan. Through this research, I have connections with local farmers and farmer groups. I’m talking with some of these farmers about working fulltime for them for a year, but I don’t know if I can apply for a work visa with this kind of work.
I have a degree in Computer Science. I’ve thought about applying for a job in IT, but I don’t think there are many jobs that would take me on for just a year.
I’m open to English teaching and other job options as well. Also, I plan on asking for advice from my my college’s international student department this week.
The N2 was the first JLPT I’ve taken, so I don’t have any Japanese language certifications.
Thanks for reading this far. I would be grateful for any recommendations.

Talk to your professor. You can extend your research student for a half year and apply for the October admissions. If you are on really good terms with your professor, he could hire you temporarily under his grant as a researcher. It’s easy for universities to get student visas (or work visas).
