Optimizing Japan arrival procedure

Following up on the general thread discussion on this topic.

With the increase of travelers and constant change of border requirements and invention of new QR codes, trying to gather some best practices to make arrivals as quick and smooth as possible for residents.

Used to do most of the process paper based, but seems there’s now a QR code/e-gate for most steps. Wondering if anyone tried them all and if worthwhile:

1/ Covid: Visit Japan form vs ministry of health questionnaire (the former seems much faster to fill in)

2/ immigration : returning resident line vs e-gate..

Someone mentioned in a previous weekly thread that residents can now use e-gates. Anyone tried this?

3/ Customs: e-gate (requires use of airport terminal or visit Japan web form) vs paper based. Some people in the weekly thread report that the old way is still faster at the moment.

Visit Japan thing seems promising and here to stay.
But according to this tweets from the Digital minister, there’s going to be some changes / improvements to expect.

  1. Its really, really depend on the number of people in each line. There are no hard answer. I have seen situations where e-gate is faster and where traditional line is faster, and there aren’t really pattern to them.
