Protip: get an electric blanket. You’ll be cosy and save tons on heating!

It sounds like something your grandma would have – but it’s actually super nice. I finally gave in and tried after being convinced by a friend. It’s cheap (like ¥2000 – ¥3000) and will allow you to lay down on heating a bit. If you’re like me, it’ll pay for itself in less than a month.

I’ve put it in my bed under the bedsheets so it’s invisible, but my bed is warm and cosy when I go to sleep. I guess you can also put it on your chair or your lap when you’re working or chilling.

  1. My electric blanket is so unbelievably precious to me. I’m hardly using my aircon because I can just cuddle up with my blanket. Highly recommend the “splurge” especially if you’re staying for longer than a year.

  2. I bought one but somehow my wife is terrified that it will electrocute her in her sleep. So for now it has found its permanent place in my home office.

  3. My conundrum is that I sweat too much in regular blankets at night, but I like to stay warm under them. It’s either stay warm under a blanket and find my bed/pajamas soaked in sweat in the morning or wake up freezing sweat free.

  4. They’re great. Warm, less electricity than an aircon and they don’t dry your throat out.

My husband never used one before he met me and now he can’t imagine a winter without it.

They come in washable varieties and some have timers, dust mite killing settings etc.

  5. Tip: electric “carpet” are stronger(hotter).

That’s the one I use on my mattress, and my weaker e-blankets are kept by the desk for the chair or feet.

  6. I actually saw a news segment the other day where they were saying electric blankets are much cheaper (electricity used per hour, like less than half the cost) compared to heating via an air conditioner.

  7. Heated mattress pad.

Filp it on to preheat the bed then I turn it off to sleep cool. Turn it back in am to warm my old bones up so I can get moving a little bit faster.

  8. I have two. One underneath my bedsheet, and one on my office chair as “seat heater”. Right now, it’s 12 °C in my office, and I am nice and warm while “working” on Reddit.

  9. You can apply bubble wrap to your windows with water. This, and good quality curtains, will keep you house very warm at night, warm enough to walk about in pajamas.

    It comes off easily, too.

  10. Isn’t an electric blanket a fire hazard? That’s the only reason I’m not getting one.

  11. Be careful to follow the proper safety procedures. Don’t layer other blankets on top of them (they’re designed to be the top layer), don’t put something like a laptop over your blanket-covered legs while using it. Don’t let it fold over itself. Use the safety timer. Etc.

Electric blankets are wonderful but if not used properly they are a serious fire hazard. Modern electric blankets are much better than what your grandmother had but it’s still a risk if you’re not using it properly.

  12. Get a high quality futon/duvet made of Polish goose down and you’ll never have to worry about an electric blanket or anything else to keep you warm. Super light and amazingly warm.

  13. I don’t know if they’re available over there, but my girlfriend got me a heated half-sleeping bag. Basically it covers my lower body and it’s long enough to come up above my lap. It’s got two heating pads built into it. One under my feet and one in a pocket for your hands. It’s great if you’ll be sitting at a cold desk for a while (especially if you need to be on camera). The US version uses 1.5 amps at 120 watts. Very low power usage!

  14. Look here at the woke mob coming for our heaters along with our xbox’s. It’s my gad damn american right to get warm the way it’s always been done. Would you just for a moment stop and think about all the petrol employees you’ll be putting out of work with a post like this?

Mods are you allowing this?! I’m leaving this sub

    Who’s coming with me!!

  15. One more pro-tip that has saved me money in the past.

Cover the inside of your windows with bubble wrap; use a spray bottle water to get the wrap to stick. It will insulate and allow light in at the same time.

You can get 20 meters of the stuff for around 700 yen at a home center.

  16. I find that using multiple smaller blankets works great. Now I’m fujisawa so it’s not crazy cold, but those little pockets of warm air between the layers mean I never need the heater on at night.

  17. I use a Dainichi kerosene heater for my bedroom (5 liter tank), and one for my living room (9 liter tank). Kerosene is 97 Yen a liter. I guess it’s cheaper than using the electric wall fan heaters. They heat the rooms really well. The only pain is having to go and get kerosene every few days and to fill up the heater tanks. Overall, though, I am glad I got them and recommend them. I was looking at an electric blanket a few days ago at Costco, but decided not to buy one. Thought about it, though.

  18. I did this too a few years ago! Just put it on before you get in bed so that it warms your blankets then switch it off when you get in to avoid running it all night/burning your house down. It’ll stay warm in there long enough for you to fall asleep!

  19. My husband and I got heated blankets from Best Shopping, primarily because one of us would always want it. It’s the perfect thing, next to a kotatsu. We can just wrap up at our desks and just not move for hours.

  20. I was skeptical at first but it’s really working wonders for me. Just put over my legs a normal one and I’m good to go for hours, barely using 暖房.

  21. Yodobashi Camera has good deals on electric blankets. No auto shutoff and they get HOT. (Sitting under mine right now.)

You shouldn’t use it in bed unless it has a timer, though. Just FYI. I use mine just when I’m at the desk or on the couch.

  22. When I lived in a wooden aparto in Aichi-ken I had an electric carpet under my futon, and it was absolutely fantastic. Turn it on to max a couple of hours before bedtime, let it warm the futon and duvet, and then turn it down to not-quite-minimum for the duration of the night. Fantastic!
