Any negatives of leaving Japan with permanent residency? Should I bother getting it?

Outside of the inheritance tax : )

I’ve been struggling somewhat with this decision. I’m going to renew my contract for another year before (likely) doing some long-term travel and likely relocating somewhere else. I don’t currently have PR but will be eligible for it this year.

Would it be worth applying for as a potential backup in case I (happen to) decide to return? I’m wondering if there are any downsides to this. I am aware that it’s possible to apply for a 5 year re-entry permit, which would help things.

Honestly I feel as though I’ve “had my fill” of Japan and am ready for something new, but I suppose I have enjoyed it enough to stay this long, and there is that (slight) chance of wanting to return.

And advice/options are appreciated.

  1. Given the chance of return, I’d go for it. Yes, some hoops to jump thru to get it, but then there’s a door behind you (after leaving) that remains wide open. And leaving options open is a good thing, IMO. Something in the next year may also change your mind about leaving, or leaving that quickly.
