I understand that the police can ask to see your residence card. Aside from that, do they have the legal power to ask for any other private information, like where you work? And if not, how would you go about declining them?
Unless it’s the dead of night, I usually just say something like “I have a doctor’s appointment, very sorry” and they let me go on my way.
The one time I got a 職質 at night, I was in a full three piece suit coming home from a work affair. I told them where I worked (Osaka City Hall) and they literally apologized and told me to have a good night.
I’ve never had to show them my residence card though, in almost 15 years here.
I mean, I have nothing to hide. If they ask, I’ll tell them.
They usually ask if I’m a student or if my husband is Japanese, which…
I’ve never said where I work, just what my occupation is. I’ve only been 職質’d twice and in neither case did they press on for more accurate answers.
