Bunions? At my age?

I’m feeling pains in my feet recently, exactly where a person would normally develop bunions. They run in my family, and my father already had severe bunions in his thirties.

I’ve done a search for podiatrists but they don’t really seem to exist in Japan. Should I go to an orthopedist instead?

  1. Does your big toe curve inward?

I believe this has to do with shoes more than anything, and if your feet are not a fit for these standard off the shelf shoes you will have more problems.

If this is the case, you can find toe separators here in Japan or online. These will prevent your big toe being bent toward your other toes as much. The result is that when you walk it wears down the side of the joint bones that grew to fill in the gap created by pushing the toe to the side….or at least that was my experience.

How you walk may also count, and I think the toe separators also will make you change the angle of your feet when you walk.

I have not needed the toe separators for years, but I was using them off and on for about seven, with the first two or three years having the most significant effect. But at my age now I cannot really expect much bone growth. I was about 35 when I was getting pains.

I think I am also choosing my shoes better somewhat subconsciously.

I have no advice on doctors because I never went to any for my bunions…or much else either.
