Guidance on Paternity Leave

My wife and I are expecting our first baby this May, and I’m curious about what rights I have as a foreign worker regarding paternity leave. If anyone can point me toward a resource that they recommend, I would greatly appreciate it.

Some information that may be relevant:

\- I’m a Canadian living in Aichi Prefecture, working in the mechanical services industry. I have been working at the same company since 2016.
\- My (Japanese) wife and I got married in April 2022. I have since changed my Visa status to Spouse of a Japanese National.
\- We plan to return to Canada when our child is young, likely in mid- to late-2024.

Specifically, I’m interested in the new laws allowing fathers to take up to one year of paternity leave. I’m very aware that would tank any future prospects that I have at my current company (not that there are many anway), so we would ideally return to Canada at the end of that year. I’ve heard that employees must return to work for a certain amount of time after taking parental care leave, though, so I’m trying to figure out what that might entail.

Has anyone been through a similar situation, recently? From what I can tell, laws regarding parental leave have changed drastically this year.
