Difficulty adding money to Suica

I’ve had an electronic Suica card in my Apple Wallet for more than a year. Whenever it needs topping up, I select up to 5,000 yen per time from my linked Visa card, and it’s added to Suica. For the past two weeks, however, the transaction doesn’t complete. Checking online, it looks like Suica has started limiting how much you can add over a certain period — Suica doesn’t say publicly how much, over what period. Today I was able to add 10,000 yen; when I tried to add more, the transaction wouldn’t go through. Anyone have any additional information to share on this weird Suica policy?

  1. I have no idea if you’re reaching this limit but a suica is limited to holding ¥20k.

  2. I have used Apple Pay Suica since the beginning, and it had that issue even then. Never figured out how they calculate the limit, but so far no issue as long as I keep topping up 10k every 3-5 days.

  3. My dad had the same issue when visiting recently from the states. He could charge up to 10,000 in a 24 hour period. We assumed it was a limitation of his credit card when used in this way. I have no such limitations when topping up with a connected Apple Card. I always keep the max 20,000 and buy everything with suica because of the cash back bonus on my apple card.

  4. Reloading using the wallet app bypass this problem. Also applicable with nanaco and pasmo.
