Learnt my kana, what next?

Hello everyone, I’m self studying and it’s day 35. I don’t have Japanese speaking friends or colleagues and have been practising entirely on my own. So far I’ve managed to learn Hiragana and Katakana.
As you can tell, I’m a slow learner, but I’m persistent. And right now I’m stuck as to what should be my next step. Do I start learning vocabularies, or common phrases, or grammar, or Kanji ? I tried to do bit of everything but it felt like such a mess. Maybe I should do it in different ratios? Idk.

My goal is to be able to hold a simple conversation in Japanese by the end of the year. And understand anime without much help. Please help me re-plan my goals, if that’s unrealistic or bit too easy.

Thank you.

  1. Step one be my friend so we can chat in japanese. Step 2 numerous options and paths, some of which are successful methods. Me personally I went the anki route for 1 year, crammed vocabulary and some kanji. But my grammer and sentence construction was really weak. I picked up a tutor from italki and requested focus on grammer (while I continue to study on my own) and I’m happy about it.

My tutor was impressed with how far I’d come on my own, but I’m nowhere near fluent.
