Over 30 y.o., trying to get a student visa to study Japanese. Do I need N5 first?

I have only found one source that claims that you need a certificate of N5-level Japanese in order to apply as a student to a Japanese learning school that will sponsor your visa if you’re over 30. Maybe it’s true and it’s just that my other sources don’t mention this. I haven’t been able to disprove this so I feel like I have to ask.

  1. For a language course? I’ve never heard of such a thing. All they say is to know kana before coming. Try gogonihon.com, they should have all the details you need.

  2. No you don’t need any JLPT level to come to Japan on any visa. Maybe there exists one specific school with that requirement but immigration doesn’t care for student visa.
