I’ve seen people use the word 苦しい (not 息苦しい) in situations where they don’t have air, so I assumed it means “suffocating”, but I can’t find this definition in any dictionary. They all say it means “painful”.
You may need to provide more context for this. Are they perhaps saying that because they don’t have air (I assume not literally, otherwise they wouldn’t be saying anything), then things are difficult and unpleasant?
