When to use 代わり forms?

It is still not clear to me what the difference in nuances between these three is:

* A(の)代わりに
* Aに代わり
* Aに代わって

From what I understood, overall they can mean two things:

1. In place of A, as a substitute for A, instead of A
2. In exchange for A, to make up for A

I looked it up in this subreddit but I couldn’t find an answer. I asked my Japanese friends but I was sadly not able to get their explanation either, except that に代わって is more polite than the other two.
